Your Guide to Buying a Television

The television market these days is a very exciting one.  There are an increasing number of options available to you. Should it be PLASMA, LCD or LED for a start??  And now we have 3D.  The most important thing about a TV is how the picture looks to you.  It is true that more expensive TV's generally offer superior picture quality but that is not always the case.  Some things to consider before buying are: What do you spend most time watching? i.e. sport, movies or soaps etc?  What type of room is it for?  e.g. a bright living room? a kitchen or bedroom?

We feel it is important that you understand the benefits of each technology.  Our stores carry a wide range of televisions to choose from and we will be happy to advise and answer all your questions.  Call in and see the latest on display at WILSONS or our Panasonic Store in Dumfries.

Plasma

Plasma screens create images by an electric current causing light to be emitted from gas trapped between two layers of glass.  Plasma screens still offer the best picture quality.  However, they are now only available in screen sizes of 42" and above.  Because of the way they generate a picture they are able to achieve extremely high levels of contrast and exceptionally good clarity for moving images.  It makes them the best choice for sport and movie enthusiasts.

LCD

LCD screens are probably what you are using to read this page. LCD screens are made up of a grid of pixels, or points. They work by emitting light at each pixel, which acts like a mosaic to build up the overall image.  LCD screens are now a lot better at dealing with faster moving images and do not suffer from the poor viewing angles of a few years back.  It does still make a difference, however, when you buy a quality LCD screen as there can be a huge variation in picture quality.

LED

LED is a variation on LCD screens. The difference is in the back-lighting, which is provided by large numbers of individual light emitting diodes. TVs featuring LED backlighting do not require the bulky fluorescent lamps of conventional LCD televisions, resulting in an extremely slim and light design.  LED TV sets are the most power efficient on the market.

SMART TVS

A new generation of SMART TV's are now on the market.  These products are fully connected to the internet and allow direct access to online content such as the BBC iPlayer TV catch up service.  This platform allows the downloading of 'apps' to your TV in much the same way that many people download apps to their smartphones.  This area of the market is growing at a fast pace and adds a lot of extra fuctionality to your TV.
